The Philippines is on the lookout for new chess talents as Olongapo City prepares to host the National Age Group Chess Championships from June 3 to 7. This event will unfold at the SMX Convention Center, enhancing its reputation as a hub for chess enthusiasts.

Organized by Mayor Rolen Paulino, Jr. and Vice Mayor Kaye Ann Legaspi in collaboration with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the championships will feature competitions for boys and girls across various age groups, from Under-8 to Under-20.

Participants will compete in standard, rapid, and blitz formats, with the top performers earning the opportunity to represent the Philippines in upcoming international events. This could pave the way for the next generation of grandmasters, following in the footsteps of legends like Eugene Torre and Janelle Mae Frayna.

Winners in the U14 to U20 categories will secure their spots as the country's representatives at the ASEAN+ Age Group Championships scheduled in Singapore later this year.

Olongapo has a history of hosting significant chess events, continuing a legacy established by the previous mayor, Rolen Paulino, Sr.
