The Philippine Men's National Football Team (PMNFT) is steering its focus toward upcoming competitions rather than the distant goal of qualifying for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Star midfielder Sandro Reyes expressed that the team is currently prioritizing immediate challenges instead.

Immediate Goals Take Precedence

I think the World Cup is something that's very far out of our eyesight right now. Today, we're just thinking about the Hyundai Cup and then we think about the next FIFA ASEAN Cup or the Asian Games.

Reyes made these remarks following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s recent State of the Nation Address (SONA), where he included football in his broader vision for Philippine sports. While Reyes acknowledged the President's call for greater support, he asserted that the team's focus remains on current tournaments.

The PMNFT's recent performance opened their ASEAN Hyundai Cup campaign with a disappointing 1-4 defeat against Myanmar, a stark contrast to their previous 5-1 victory over the same team during a friendly match.

As regional football competitions evolve, Reyes believes that increased investment and attention are crucial for the team's future success. He stated, "It would be nice to get even more support than we are getting, so we can achieve those goals that he is saying."

The 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to take place across six countries and will feature an expanded format with 48 teams. For now, the PMNFT is channeling its energy into immediate matches and tournaments, with hopes that continued hard work will pave the way for future opportunities.
