De La Salle University showcased its prowess by defeating National University in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, during Game 1 of the UAAP Season 88 women's volleyball championship on Wednesday.
The match took place at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, where the Lady Spikers quickly established their dominance.
In the critical third set, the score was tied at 15 when La Salle launched an impressive 8-0 run, led by Shevana Laput, Amie Provido, and Shane Reterta, to secure a 23-15 advantage.
Despite a brief interruption from NU's Chamy Maaya and a La Salle error that narrowed the gap to 23-17, Reterta clinched the match point with a key net play.
An attack error from Vange Alinsug ultimately sealed NU's fate, allowing La Salle to close out the match.
Angel Canino was instrumental for the Lady Spikers, scoring 17 points through 15 attacks, a block, and an ace, in addition to contributing nine digs.
Reterta added 11 points and excelled in defense with nine digs and 23 excellent receptions, while Provido and Laput scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Coaching Insights
Head coach Ramil de Jesus reflected on the team's performance, stating, "There’s an advantage and a disadvantage to our rest. In a stepladder format, you get to practice playing under pressure. When you’re well-rested, you have tune-ups, but not as much pressure."
He noted that although their service started slow, the team eventually adjusted to match NU's intensity.
NU's Efforts
Arah Panique led National University with 18 points. However, super rookie Sam Cantada had limited playing time as she continues to recover from a minor injury.
