Filipino tennis star Alexandra "Alex" Eala is set to confront Chinese player Zheng Qinwen, her previous tormentor at the Asian Games, in the opening round of the Mubadala D.C. Open.

This first-round match is scheduled for either Monday or Tuesday in Washington, D.C. The two players are facing off for the first time on the WTA tour since their intense semifinal battle in 2023.

We have a lot of history between us, and I’m ready to fight for this match,

Alexandra Eala, Tennis Player
  • Eala is currently ranked No. 29 in the world.
  • Zheng holds a ranking of No. 123.

In their last encounter at the Asian Games, Zheng triumphed over Eala in a hard-fought three-set match, 6–1, 6(5)–7, 6–3, securing a spot in the final and winning the gold medal.

Eala secured a bronze medal from that tournament, and she now looks to turn the tables on Zheng.

Should Eala advance past Zheng, she will face either defending champion Leylah Fernandez or Magda Linette in the next round.
