The two players last met in 2023 during the semifinals of the Asian Games, where Zheng narrowly defeated Eala in a gripping three-set match. Eala secured a bronze medal in that tournament.

Currently ranked No. 29 in the world, Eala's confidence is riding high after a successful grass-court season, highlighted by her historic fourth-round finish at Wimbledon.
In contrast, Zheng, now ranked No. 123, has been working to regain her form after undergoing elbow surgery last year. Previously ranked as high as No. 4, Zheng's performance has been hindered since her return.
If Eala advances past Zheng, she will face either Magda Linette or defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the next round.
Doubles Update
Eala will not compete in doubles at the Mubadala D.C. Open as her partner, Venus Williams, has opted to team up with Diana Shnaider instead. The duo was initially set to play together but has since changed plans.
Eala and Williams previously reached the quarterfinals at the Bad Homburg Open, where they first teamed up.
