Alex Eala and Hailey Baptiste's journey at the Italian Open came to a halt on May 12 as they were defeated in the first round of the women’s doubles.
The pair faced a formidable challenge against Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend, losing 2-6, 1-6 in just 69 minutes.
Siniakova, ranked No. 1 in doubles, and Townsend, ranked No. 2, proved too strong for Eala and Baptiste.
The higher-ranked duo converted five out of eleven break point opportunities, while Eala and Baptiste could not capitalize on their four chances.
Both players had previously exited the singles competition in Rome, with Eala falling to Elena Rybakina and Baptiste losing to Elina Svitolina in the round of 32.
Top Players Advance
Rybakina, currently ranked No. 2, will face Svitolina, ranked No. 7, in the quarterfinals.
The winner will meet either Jessica Pegula or Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. Notably, top seed Aryna Sabalenka is absent from the quarterfinals after her loss in the third round.
Future Prospects for Eala and Baptiste
Baptiste, who is 24 and ranked No. 25 in singles, has had previous success in doubles, winning her first title in 2021.
Last year, Eala and Coco Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals in the same doubles tournament.
