Dumanjug emerged victorious in the inaugural Calderon Cup, defeating Malabuyoc 96-76 on May 9. The championship game, held at the Dumanjug Astrodome, saw the home team secure a dominant two-game sweep.
Renz Nathan Villarojo led Dumanjug's charge, scoring 20 points and earning the Finals Most Valuable Player title. His performance included eight successful field goals and contributions in rebounds and assists.
Dumanjug maintained control throughout the game, leveraging their size advantage to dominate in the paint, outscoring Malabuyoc 64-42. Their fast-break offense also proved effective, tallying 20 points in transition.
Despite Malabuyoc's efforts, particularly from Jake Leo Quim who scored 25 points, the visitors struggled to keep pace. Other notable performances included contributions from TJ Tejedor and Cleveron Fernandez.
Celebration and Recognition
The victory not only marked a historic moment for Dumanjug but also highlighted the community's support, with Mayor Gungun Gica and Rep. Patricia Calderon in attendance.
Dumanjug also placed two players, Jhun Miguel Telmo and Carl Escuadro, in the tournament's Mythical Five, recognizing their outstanding performances throughout the competition.
Alegria Takes Third Place
In the battle for third place, Alegria defeated Moalboal 84-73. Jesham Saban led Alegria with a double-double, while Kyle Igorote paced Moalboal.
Looking ahead, the Calderon Cup will showcase its volleyball tournament on May 22 in Badian, focusing primarily on women's teams.
