Davao City gymnast Zoey Jhanine Sangutan is making headlines with her impressive achievements in gymnastics. Recently named Rising Athlete of the Year by the Davao Sportswriters Association, this 14-year-old has quickly become an influential figure in the sport.

Sangutan’s athletic career took off during the pandemic when she began following gymnastics tutorials online. Inspired by her favorite gymnasts, she practiced strength and flexibility exercises daily.
Her mother noticed her dedication and arranged for online lessons with a Manila-based gymnastics club, which marked the beginning of her formal training.
Sangutan's local success includes multiple medals at Davao City and Davao Region Athletic Association meets. Her breakthrough moment came at the 2024 Palarong Pambansa in Cebu, where she earned a bronze medal in the floor exercise.
This paved the way for her debut in trampoline gymnastics, where she excelled at the 2025 Batang Pinoy, winning two additional medals.
Her international accolades include winning four gold medals and an all-around title at both the Bangkok Gymnastics Invitational in 2025 and the Shanghai Gymnastics Club Invitational shortly after.
While she credits her success to her personal efforts, Sangutan emphasizes the support of her family. They have been instrumental in her journey, offering encouragement during tough times.
Looking ahead, she is preparing for the 2026 Batang Pinoy in Bacolod City and the DepEd Games-Davao City Athletic Association Meet, aiming to qualify for the next Palarong Pambansa.
To enhance her skills, Sangutan is receiving specialized training under a European coach at Davao GoldenTwist Gymnastics Training Center, which has also been recognized for its contributions to gymnastics in the region.
