Alex Eala has successfully advanced to the second round of the Italian Open after defeating Poland's Magdalena Frech. Eala won the match with a score of 6-0, 3-6, 6-4, in just over two hours.
This victory marks Eala's first win in a WTA 1000 event and her fourth tournament of the clay season this year.
Eala's next opponent will be China's Xinyu Wang, who is currently ranked 33rd in the WTA singles rankings.
Potential Third-Round Challenge
The winner of the upcoming match between Eala and Wang could face No. 2 ranked Elena Rybakina in the third round.
Rybakina is set to compete against either Lilli Tagger or Maria Sakkari, having received a bye in the first round.
Eala is assured of a minimum payout of €25,515 (approximately ₱1.82 million) for reaching this stage of the tournament.
Throughout her match against Frech, Eala struggled with double faults, committing four, including three in the final set. In comparison, Frech only had one double fault.
However, Eala capitalized on her break points, converting six out of twelve, while Frech managed three out of nine.
Withdrawals Impacting the Tournament
The Italian Open has seen notable withdrawals, including Marta Kostyuk, who recently won the Madrid Open but is sidelined due to a hip issue.
Emma Raducanu has also withdrawn from the tournament, missing out on recent competitions in Linz and Madrid.
Kostyuk expressed her disappointment over her withdrawal, stating that she had hoped to perform well in Rome.
Top Players Still Competing
Despite these withdrawals, top-ranked players such as Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, and Coco Gauff remain in contention.
Sabalenka is set to face Barbora Krejcikova, while Gauff and Swiatek await their opponents after receiving first-round byes.
