Filipina tennis player Alex Eala has moved up four spots in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings following her successful first-round match at the Italian Open on May 6, 2026.
Eala defeated Poland's Magdalena Frech in a competitive match, winning 6-0, 3-6, 6-4. This victory elevates her ranking to 38th, marking a significant milestone in her career.
The 20-year-old athlete is set to face China’s Wang Xinyu, who is currently ranked 31st, in the next round.
Reflecting on her progress, Eala expressed pride in her achievements and the hard work put in with her team. 'I think I’ve come a long way from last year. It really means a lot,' she stated.
Eala previously reached her career-high ranking of 29th on March 16, making her the highest-ranked Filipino in WTA history.
During her match, Eala displayed remarkable focus and determination, bouncing back after losing the second set. She aims to advance further in the tournament, stating, 'I haven’t passed the second round in a grand slam. So that would be nice.'
'My goal is to do well, hopefully pass a couple of rounds. I just want to go and give my best,' Eala added.
