The ETH team has successfully transferred around 100 petabytes of NASA’s climate data to their supercomputing facility in Lugano, Switzerland. This data transfer took nearly a year and amounts to approximately six billion files, comparable to the storage of 20 million feature-length films.

The AI-generated statistical models developed by ETH researchers are proving to be far more efficient than traditional methods. These models can produce global weather forecasts in a matter of minutes, enabling continuous updates that can inform early warning systems.

Knutti pointed to past incidents where timely data analysis could have mitigated disaster impacts. For instance, satellite data indicated potential risks before a glacier collapse in a Swiss village last year, allowing for timely evacuations that saved lives.

The researchers believe that similar predictive capabilities could be applied to other geological disasters, potentially preventing loss of life in future events. As they continue to refine their models, the team is optimistic about the life-saving potential of AI in natural disaster forecasting.
