Zaldy Co, a former lawmaker facing graft charges in the Philippines, is currently residing in a €200 million (approximately P14.18 billion) mansion on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, according to Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla.
Remulla disclosed this information during a forum in Manila, describing the luxurious property as having 10 bedrooms and located near high-end stores, including Christian Dior.
The Secretary clarified that the property’s value is estimated in euros, corresponding to the current exchange rate.
Co is wanted for his alleged involvement in a P289.5-million flood control project scam in Oriental Mindoro.
Previously, President Marcos announced that Co had been detained in the Czech Republic after attempting to cross into Germany with invalid documents. However, he was released after 72 hours.
Malacañang has indicated that Co traveled to France to seek political asylum.
When asked if the Philippine government would intervene to block Co's asylum request in France, Remulla confirmed that discussions are currently ongoing.
Legal Implications and Next Steps
The situation raises concerns about the potential for Co to evade justice in the Philippines as he seeks refuge abroad.
There are conversations going on regarding the possibility of blocking his asylum bid in France.
