The Senate impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte may conclude by December 2026, Senate Presiding Officer Francis Escudero announced. The next session is scheduled for November 9, where the defense will begin presenting its evidence.
Defense Witnesses and Proceedings
It’s possible, depending on how many witnesses the defense will present.

The defense's pretrial brief indicated over 10 potential witnesses, but this number may change. Escudero noted that the time required for testimony can vary significantly, with some witnesses taking days, while others may only need a short time.
- Witnesses may take from 30 minutes to several days to testify.
- The prosecution has withdrawn three of the four articles of impeachment.
The prosecution's decision to drop allegations involving misuse of confidential funds, bribery, and threats means the Senate will only consider the remaining charge related to alleged ill-gotten wealth. Escudero clarified that the prosecution cannot be forced to pursue abandoned charges.
Escudero emphasized the importance of the upcoming phase, stating that it will allow the public to hear Duterte's defense directly. With the prosecution's case concluded, the trial’s focus will shift to the defense's arguments.
He assured that fairness would be maintained throughout the trial, stating, "Whatever we did with the prosecution, we should also do with the defense to ensure fairness." Escudero expressed anticipation for the defense's presentation and encouraged Filipinos to listen to the discussions from each senator-judge.
