Vandalism has marred preparations for the upcoming ASEAN Summit, as street decorations in Lapu-Lapu City were found damaged. Local authorities are now offering a reward for information on those responsible.

On May 4, 2026, Lone District Representative Junard "Ahong" Chan reported the destruction of several ASEAN-themed installations in Barangays Ibo and Pajo. The decorations were strategically placed along major roads to enhance the city's appearance for the summit.

Chan called for the offenders to come forward, stating that an investigation is in progress. He emphasized that anyone who provides useful information will be rewarded.

We have already started the investigation, and the perpetrators will definitely be caught. If anyone can provide additional information, we will give a reward.

The damaged decorations were part of a cultural initiative aimed at showcasing the creativity and heritage of the barangays in Lapu-Lapu City. This initiative was linked to the MUGNA Street Design Competition, organized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts in partnership with the local government.

Eleven barangays participated in the competition, which encouraged local artists to represent their traditions through art installations. Chan expressed disappointment over the vandalism, highlighting the collective effort involved in creating the decorations.

So many people work hard to make our city beautiful, but it gets ruined because of troublemakers like you.

The ASEAN Summit will take place from May 7 to 8, 2026, in Lapu-Lapu City. Delegates are expected to arrive on May 5, with the summit serving as a crucial platform for regional leaders to discuss key issues.
