Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão expressed his commitment to promote Cebu after touring its historic landmarks on May 9, 2026. This visit followed his participation in the ASEAN Summit held in Cebu.
Gusmão was greeted by local officials, including Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival and Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña, during his visit to sites such as Magellan’s Cross and Fort San Pedro.
As part of the tour, the prime minister honored local officials by draping them with tais, a traditional woven cloth from Timor-Leste symbolizing respect and friendship.
When asked about promoting Cebu back home, Gusmão readily agreed, indicating a strong interest in sharing the city's rich history.
“Of course,” he said, referencing Magellan’s Cross. “Cebu’s historical sites offer a glimpse into the past and our shared history.”

Gusmão's visit highlighted Cebu's significance as a cultural and historical hub, especially as it hosted the ASEAN Summit, which focused on key issues like energy security.
Timor-Leste joined ASEAN as its 11th member state in October 2025, marking a significant milestone after years of seeking membership.
During the summit, the Philippines, as chair, implemented cost-saving measures, compressing the event into two days amid ongoing global challenges.
