In a closely watched special election, Jennifer Barzaga has claimed victory for Cavite's 4th congressional district. Her win continues the Barzaga family's long-standing political dominance in Dasmariñas City.
Election Context and Voter Turnout
The elections are over, and the decision of our constituents is clear. I wholeheartedly congratulate Jenny Barzaga. Dasmarineños have entrusted you with their votes, their hopes, and their future.
Raul Rex Rosario Mangubat, Former Vice Mayor
- Jennifer Barzaga received 185,668 votes, or 41.50% of the registered voter base.
- Rainy weather affected expected voter turnout, with officials anticipating below 60% participation.
Jennifer's success follows the expulsion of her son, Francisco 'Kiko' Barzaga, from the House of Representatives on June 2, 2026. Kiko's departure created a vacancy in a district that has seen Barzaga representation for 26 years.
The special election was marked by low turnout, attributed to heavy rains caused by the southwest monsoon. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) noted that turnout could drop below earlier projections of 60% to 65%. Comelec Chair George Garcia expressed hope that at least half of the 447,387 registered voters would participate.
Jennifer Barzaga's victory not only maintains the family’s hold on the congressional seat but may also lead to further political succession within the Barzaga clan. If she vacates the mayoralty, her son, Vice Mayor Thirdy Barzaga, is expected to step into her role.
The Barzaga family's influence in Dasmariñas has deep roots, dating back to 1998 when Elpidio 'Pidi' Barzaga Jr. became mayor. Their political legacy includes significant contributions to the city's development and transition from a rural municipality to a first-class city.
