Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo Lacson declared his intent to reject any motions aimed at halting the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. He stated that if the impeachment complaint reaches the Senate, he will vote against any attempts to delay the proceedings.
Lacson clarified his position on social media, asserting that he is committed to ensuring the Senate fulfills its constitutional role as an impeachment court.
During a recent Senate forum, Lacson noted that while he supports convening the Senate, the decision ultimately lies with the majority of senators.
Constitutional Duty of the Senate
Lacson emphasized that convening as an impeachment court is a constitutional obligation. He indicated that the Supreme Court could intervene if the Senate fails to fulfill this duty.
This position to oppose any attempts to block the convening of the Senate as an impeachment court has nothing to do with my decision to convict or acquit the respondent as I will always be guided by the evidence to be presented and nothing else.

The House Committee on Justice has already approved Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Duterte, which are set to be presented to the full House. If at least 106 out of 318 lawmakers approve the report, the articles will move to the Senate for trial.
Senate President Vicente Sotto III has warned senators to maintain impartiality when the Senate convenes as an impeachment court.
