As the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) prepares for its inaugural parliamentary session, security forces have ramped up their presence in Cotabato City. The session is set to take place on Friday, October 30, 2026.

Enhanced Security Measures in Place

Military and police units are on high alert, with troops and armored vehicles deployed across key locations. Brig. Gen. Edgar Catu, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, and Cotabato City Police Office Director Col. Jibin Bongcayao conducted thorough security checks to ensure readiness.

The inspection is focused on strengthening security measures, enhancing operational preparedness, and ensuring that security forces remain ready to respond effectively to potential threats.

Despite heightened security, authorities report no specific threats related to the session. Catu emphasized collaboration with various stakeholders to prevent disruptions.

  • Elected members of the BARMM Parliament will convene to select key officials.
  • Security forces are securing entry points, including waterways, to maintain order.

The session will be held at the Shariff Kabunsuan Cultural Center, attracting top officials and dignitaries. Candidates for chief minister include interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua and Ahod 'Al Haj Murad' Ebrahim.

The regional government's establishment comes after a turbulent history, including violence during previous elections, which saw seven fatalities in September.

Catu urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, stressing that cooperation is crucial for maintaining peace.

To facilitate security measures, government employees at the Bangsamoro Government Center will work from home leading up to the session.
