Mel Senen Sarmiento has been appointed as the new chair of the Government Peace Implementing Panel (GPH PIP) for the Bangsamoro Peace Process. This announcement was made on July 15, 2026, by Atty. Claire Castro, Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office.

Sarmiento, who is also the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity, is the sixth individual to hold this position since the establishment of the GPH PIP. In his new role, he aims to strengthen the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB).
He stated, "The Marcos administration will double its efforts in implementing the landmark and historic Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro." Sarmiento seeks to work closely with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to ensure a productive and transparent process.

While there is enthusiasm about Sarmiento's dual role, some experts have raised concerns regarding the challenges of managing two significant positions. Gus Miclat from the Initiatives for International Dialogue remarked that while not ideal, the appointment could help consolidate efforts in the peace process.
Sarmiento’s extensive experience in governance, including his tenure as Local Government Secretary, positions him well for this critical role. His leadership will be closely watched as stakeholders seek to address historical injustices and fulfill the promises of peace.
