The call for accountability comes after the House of Representatives voted 255-26 in favor of impeaching Duterte on May 11. Four articles of impeachment have been forwarded to the Senate, detailing claims of misuse of public funds and threats against government officials.
Activists like Allysa Ancheta, chair of Gabriela Youth-Davao, believe the impeachment process is overdue and stress the need for Duterte to face scrutiny over her handling of education funds. They argue that better educational facilities should take precedence over confidential expenditures.
The groups express concern that allies of the Vice President may attempt to stall the trial, reminiscent of strategies used during previous impeachment efforts. They assert that the integrity of the trial is essential for restoring public trust.
Sissay added that the impeachment process reflects a broader issue of corruption and impunity within the Philippine political landscape, urging citizens to remain vigilant and demand transparency.
With the Senate set to convene soon, these organizations stress that citizens must not only monitor the proceedings but also push for genuine democratic values and accountability from all leaders.
