A mission to assert Philippine sovereignty took place on Sunday when Atin Ito planted the national flag on Pag-asa Cay 2, also known as Sandy Cay. This event occurred early in the morning, showcasing a bold stance against ongoing Chinese activities in the West Philippine Sea.
The group, consisting of volunteers and led by Akbayan Representative Dadah Kiram Ismula, departed from Pag-asa Island at 5:40 a.m. They navigated through waters patrolled by several Chinese vessels.
Upon reaching their destination, they successfully raised the Philippine flag. Ismula described the act as a peaceful yet defiant message against illegal incursions.
Our message is clear: the West Philippine Sea is ours. No amount of intimidation can erase that fact.
Rep. Dadah Kiram Ismula
This action underscores the ongoing tensions in the area, particularly amidst reports of increased Chinese Coast Guard activity. Pag-asa Cay 2 is recognized as part of the Philippines’ territorial waters.
The event reflects a growing civic initiative to uphold Philippine sovereignty against China's expansive claims and the construction of artificial islands in the region.
