Nicholas Kaufman has requested to step down as the lead attorney representing former President Rodrigo Duterte in his ongoing crimes against humanity case at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
His resignation is pending approval from Trial Chamber III, which oversees Duterte's case.
In a public filing on May 8, Kaufman revealed that Duterte intends to hire a new lawyer. Although the name of this replacement remains confidential, Kaufman confirmed that discussions have taken place.

Kaufman expressed confidence in his successor's capabilities, emphasizing their experience with the ICC.
He noted that the new counsel is prepared to attend a status conference scheduled for May 27, which will officially commence the trial phase.
During this conference, both parties will be required to submit relevant documents and evidence for the trial.
