President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. inaugurated the 48th Asean Summit in Cebu on May 8, 2026, calling for heightened collaboration among Southeast Asian leaders.
During his keynote address, Marcos emphasized the need for collective resolve to address escalating global challenges.
He welcomed leaders to Lapu-Lapu City, highlighting Cebu's historical significance in Asean's development.
Cebu's Historic Role in Asean
Marcos noted that Cebu was the location of the signing of the Cebu Declaration two decades ago, which laid the groundwork for the Asean Charter.
He described the province as a "fitting place" for renewed discussions, stating, "Once more, we find ourselves here in Cebu at a defining moment in our shared journey."
Addressing Geopolitical Challenges
The summit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, particularly instability in the Middle East, affecting the region's stability.
Marcos urged leaders to provide hope and reassurance to their citizens amid these uncertainties. He stressed the importance of Asean's ongoing work, stating, "The world of Asean must continue, not despite the challenges, but because the times demand our answers to those challenges."
"If there is one lesson Asean has learned over the decades, it is that difficult times do not divide us. Rather, they present opportunities that strengthen our resolve to work more closely, more carefully, and more purposefully," said Marcos.
All 11 Asean member states are represented at this year's summit, with Myanmar sending its Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
