Senator Loren Legarda was elected as the new Senate President Pro Tempore on May 11, 2026, marking her return to the role after previously serving from July 2022 to May 2024.
A seasoned legislator, Legarda has chaired important committees, including Finance and Foreign Relations, and has led initiatives in education, climate action, and social protection. She is the first female Senate Majority Leader.

In her acceptance speech, Legarda outlined her vision for the role, emphasizing the need for order and continuity within the Senate. "The Senate President Pro Tempore helps ensure that the work of the Senate continues with order, stability, and respect for the institution," she stated.
Legarda highlighted the current economic challenges, calling for prompt legislative action to address rising living costs. She stated, "We cannot allow delay, complacency, or inaction to stand in the way of meaningful reform."
