Senator Loren Legarda is backing her son, Batangas 1st District Rep. Leandro Leviste, in urging Congress to investigate the distribution of government cash aid and subsidies in Batangas.
Legarda filed Senate Resolution No. 381 on May 4, highlighting concerns over the alleged mishandling of aid distribution among various barangays.
Reports have surfaced indicating that residents faced crowded conditions and long wait times to access financial support.
The senator also pointed out delays in the release of fuel subsidies for public utility drivers, noting issues with incomplete beneficiary lists and logistical problems.
Legarda expressed serious concerns about the impact of such practices on the effectiveness and humanity of relief efforts.
She specifically mentioned the exclusion of at least 84 barangays from aid distribution under the 'Bawat Barangay Makikinabang' Program, despite assurances that all would receive funding.
The senator raised suspicions that political bias may have influenced this exclusion, as indicated by the branding of aid materials with government logos.
In addition to the congressional inquiry, Legarda is calling for an independent investigation by the Office of the President into the 'discriminatory implementation' of the aid programs.
Concerns Raised by Local Lawmakers
Leviste initially brought attention to the exclusion of barangays during a financial aid distribution event led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
The President should inquire why these barangays were omitted, to prevent further misuse of public funds,
Leviste stated, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability.
He also suggested that instead of increasing aid, the government should consider suspending the fuel excise tax to ease financial burdens on citizens.
