President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has fueled speculation regarding a possible Cabinet role for Benhur Abalos, the former Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary, following the expiration of a one-year appointment ban on defeated candidates from the 2025 elections.
During a media interview on June 18, 2026, in Kazan, Russia, Marcos expressed his desire for Abalos to contribute more actively to the government, stating, "Of course, I want Benhur to play a more active role in government."
I wouldn’t mind finding a way for him to help us in an official capacity.

Abalos previously resigned from his Cabinet position in October 2024 to run for senator but finished 16th in the race. His past roles include being the national campaign manager for Marcos in the 2022 presidential elections. Despite ongoing rumors, Marcos clarified that no existing Cabinet members would be removed to accommodate Abalos.
- Abalos lost his Senate bid in 2025, finishing in 16th place.
- He was previously a key figure in Marcos' campaign in 2022.
Marcos emphasized the importance of stability within his Cabinet, arguing that unnecessary reshuffling could disrupt governance and hinder progress. He asserted that current officials are effectively fulfilling their roles and have gained valuable experience.
The President's comments come amidst broader discussions about potential changes within his administration, although he dismissed rumors of a significant reshuffle.
