In Pasig City, young residents are taking charge of their communities, engaging in governance beyond the confines of elections. Organizations like Kabataang Tambuli ng Pasig (KTP) and PasigLaban are leading the charge.

Youth Empowerment: A New Era in Pasig Governance

'When the government invests in our youth, we get more platforms for civic participation,' says PasigLaban executive director Mark Alcazar.

These organizations have mobilized local support to tackle issues such as literacy and community development. Their efforts not only enhance governance but also promote a culture of civic responsibility among the youth.

KTP, for example, emerged in response to the 2019 electoral victory of Vico Sotto. Board member Kiko Santos noted that the youth’s drive to influence governance should not hinge solely on political leadership.

  • KTP initiated the 2019 Pasig Youth Summit to address community issues.
  • PasigLaban transitioned from a political campaign group to a nonprofit focusing on volunteer mobilization.

The local government has also recognized the importance of youth engagement. They launched the Youth Participation Organization Passport (YPOP) in 2022 to reward active youth organizations.

Through YPOP, organizations earn points for participating in city events, which can lead to project grants ranging from P50,000 to over P100,000.

This institutional support is a game changer, allowing groups like KTP and PasigLaban to access necessary resources without relying on political favors.

As youth participation flourishes, these organizations play a critical role in holding the government accountable. Santos emphasized that young people in Pasig are not mere volunteers but key stakeholders in governance.

With growing involvement, young Pasigueños are shaping policies that directly affect their lives, fostering a culture of transparency and responsiveness in local governance.
