House prosecutors are set to address the Senate Impeachment Court today, October 5, regarding Article III, which alleges bribery involving Vice President Batangas 2nd District Rep. Gerville Luistro, the lead prosecutor, indicated that the panel's formal manifestation will outline their position amid questions raised by Malacañang.
The bribery accusations stem from testimonies of former officials from the Department of Education (DepEd) who alleged they received cash payments from Duterte to bypass procurement regulations.
Our responsibility remains clear: to follow the evidence and bring a focused, well-supported case to its conclusion. That responsibility guides every decision we make.
Gerville Luistro, Lead Prosecutor
Concerns from the executive branch have surfaced, with Presidential Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro questioning whether abandoning the bribery allegations would hinder transparency.
While Luistro has not confirmed the abandonment of the bribery charge, other prosecutors hinted that the panel may drop Article III to expedite the proceedings.
Manila 2nd District Rep. Joel Chua noted that avoiding prolonged trials is a priority, while Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong suggested that discussions around the bribery charge are ongoing.
The impeachment case is set against a backdrop of significant public interest, with the outcome likely affecting perceptions of government integrity and accountability.
