The Department of National Defense (DND) has condemned the Chinese Embassy in Manila for its dismissal of the 2016 Arbitral Award, which favored the Philippines in its maritime dispute with China.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. responded to the embassy's comments, made on June 23, that characterized the award as "political manipulation disguised in legal garb" and declared it "illegal, null and void."
Teodoro stated that the embassy's remarks reveal the intentions of the Chinese Communist Party toward the Philippines, expressing concern over the insincerity exhibited in their response.
The Chinese Embassy statement replying to our [DFA] is a window into the true intentions of the Chinese Communist Party in dealing with our Country.

The DND's criticism highlights the ongoing maritime tensions in the region, particularly as the Philippines reasserts its rights in the West Philippine Sea, an area claimed largely by China.
Teodoro further condemned the embassy's language, labeling it an "arrogant display of deceitful indignation." He emphasized that such claims lack credibility and are often accompanied by bluster.
- Philippines asserts rights in West Philippine Sea
- China claims extensive areas under the 10-dash line
This latest exchange comes as the Philippines seeks to reinforce its position following the 2016 ruling, which invalidated China's extensive claims in the South China Sea. However, Beijing continues to reject the ruling, complicating diplomatic relations.
The DND's firm stance reflects a broader historical context of maritime disputes in Southeast Asia, where similar tensions have led to international scrutiny and calls for greater regional cooperation.
