China reiterated its commitment to defending its territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea over the weekend. This statement follows reports of a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel shadowing a Philippine civilian mission.
The Chinese Embassy criticized the Atin Ito civil society coalition, accusing it of engaging in provocative activities while claiming to protect Philippine sovereignty. The embassy asserted these attempts have consistently failed.
According to Atin Ito, a CCG vessel, identified by bow number 3103, was observed trailing the Philippine-flagged MV Kapitan Felix Oca. The incident occurred on Friday morning as the ship was heading to Pag-asa Island.
Spokesman Emman Hizon reported that the CCG vessel was seen approximately 3.2 nautical miles from the civilian mission ship at around 7:20 a.m.
At the time of the sighting, the MV Kapitan Felix Oca was about 90 nautical miles from Manila and 60 nautical miles west of Mindoro. This mission aims to assert Philippine presence and assist communities on Pag-asa Island.
This latest encounter highlights the ongoing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, part of the larger South China Sea, where territorial claims by China conflict with those of several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines.
Rising Tensions in the Region
The incident is a reminder of the complex geopolitical landscape in the West Philippine Sea. As China's assertions continue, the Philippines remains firm in its efforts to establish its presence in the contested waters.
China will continue to resolutely safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.
