Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian has announced that the bill to extend the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials to five years has been sent to Malacañang. The proposed measure also aims to defer the upcoming Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE).
Gatchalian stated, "We already sent it to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and as far as I know, there are no indications that it will be vetoed. The terms for barangay officials will increase to five years, extending the tenure of current officials by two years."

The Senate approved Senate Bill 2387, which amends Republic Act 12232, changing the term of barangay and SK officials from four to five years. The next BSKE will now occur on the second Monday of November 2028.
Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero, the bill's principal author, emphasized that the five-year term would allow local officials more time to develop and assess their programs effectively.
