Rep. Brian Poe has called on global stakeholders to unite in protecting the West Philippine Sea (WPS), citing its critical importance for marine biodiversity and international trade.
Speaking at the G1 Global Conference in Tokyo, Poe stressed that the maritime dispute is not solely a national issue but a global concern.
This is not just the Philippine problem. This is all of our problems because trillions of dollars’ worth of commercial industry flows through the West Philippine Sea.

Poe highlighted the ecological richness of the WPS, warning that neglect could have dire consequences for both the environment and regional economies.
- The WPS is essential for the livelihoods of Filipino fisherfolk.
- Recent incidents of intimidation and overfishing threaten local fishing communities.
He pointed out that incidents like water cannon use against Filipino fishermen and overfishing by larger vessels create an unsafe fishing environment.
To address these challenges, Poe called for enhanced capabilities for the Philippine Coast Guard, noting Japan's support in improving surveillance and fleet resources.
During the conference, Jack McCain, CEO of McCain Advisory, emphasized the need for coordinated efforts among regional coast guards to tackle maritime security challenges.
So making sure that both the Korean Coast Guard and the Japanese Coast Guard and the Philippine Coast Guard all have a set of responses and a set of responsibilities that is clear.

Japanese Congressman Keishi Abe also advocated for stronger ties between the Philippines and Australia, urging a collaborative approach to tackle 21st-century challenges.
Poe's appeal for international support reflects a broader need for collaborative governance in the Indo-Pacific region to ensure sustainable use and protection of marine resources.
