Senator Bato dela Rosa returned to the Senate on May 11, 2026, after a lengthy absence, sparking varied public reactions.
Actress Bela Padilla criticized the senator's behavior during this return, particularly focusing on his emotional outbursts.
Dela Rosa had not participated in Senate sessions since November 11, 2025. His comeback coincided with a significant power shift in the Senate, as he was part of the group that unseated Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.
During the session, dela Rosa appeared distressed when National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agents attempted to serve him an arrest warrant related to his involvement in the controversial drug war under former President Rodrigo Duterte.
While some senators expressed support for dela Rosa, Padilla took to social media to question his reactions, particularly to a reporter's inquiries about his extended absence.
Padilla posted on Instagram, asking, "Who gave that man the right to shout at a woman calmly asking him questions that are valid?" She further emphasized the need for accountability from public officials.
She continued, "Why so hysterical? Calm down. Did you come to work today to finally do some good work today, sir?" Padilla highlighted the importance of senators being present and active in their roles.
Drawing on her own experiences, Padilla pointed out that despite facing challenges, she still prioritizes her work commitments. "Aren’t senators important? Don’t their decisions affect millions of lives?" she questioned.
Currently, dela Rosa is under Senate protective custody as he seeks assistance from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. regarding his legal issues.
