The Philippines, currently chairing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for 2026, has formally requested Myanmar to allow its special envoy to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi. This request follows the news of Suu Kyi's recent transfer to house arrest.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, designated as the special envoy, aims to engage various stakeholders to foster an inclusive national dialogue.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has expressed optimism about Suu Kyi's transfer, viewing it as a positive step towards Myanmar's adherence to the Five-Point Consensus (5PC).
Calls for Greater Transparency
In addition to the access request, the DFA has urged Myanmar to enhance transparency regarding Suu Kyi's situation. They advocate for her ability to communicate with family, emphasizing that this would signify real commitment to national reconciliation.
The DFA also welcomed Myanmar's recent decision to grant amnesty to over 1,500 political prisoners, viewing these actions as vital for building confidence and achieving long-term stability.
