Manases “Mans” Carpio, husband of Vice President Sara Duterte, reportedly withdrew P41 million in cash in a single day, according to Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC) Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura. The transactions occurred on August 6, 2024, during a Senate impeachment court hearing.

Details of the Transactions

Her husband walked out of two banks with P41 million in cash in a single day, but this is not reflected in their joint SALN.

Buenaventura disclosed that the withdrawals were made through six covered transaction reports (CTRs), which included both cash withdrawals and check encashments. The prosecution plans to use these transactions as evidence of unexplained wealth against Duterte.

The couple's 2024 joint Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth (SALN) did not account for these cash withdrawals, raising further questions. Defense attorney Mark Vinluan contested the relevance of Carpio's transactions, arguing that he is not an impeachable official.

However, Presiding Officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero permitted the evidence, highlighting the marital connection between Carpio and Duterte as significant to the case.

In addition to Carpio's withdrawals, Buenaventura mentioned other significant cash transactions linked to Duterte, including a P2.37-million withdrawal on December 5, 2024, and another P5.97 million on December 20 from various banks.

The prosecution aims to illustrate a pattern of non-disclosure regarding Duterte’s assets, particularly concerning potential undisclosed time deposits from 2020 to 2022.
