The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has classified 27 areas in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) as 'red category' due to serious threats and a history of election-related violence. This designation comes as the region prepares for its first parliamentary elections on September 14.
Security Risks in BARMM Regions
According to Comelec's report released on July 15, the majority of these high-risk areas are located in Lanao del Sur, which accounts for 21 of the 27 listed regions. The remaining areas include three from Maguindanao del Sur and others from Basilan and the Special Geographic Areas.
The designation of these areas reflects ongoing security challenges as we approach critical elections in the region.

- Special Geographic Areas: Tugunan
In addition to the red category, 27 areas have been placed under the orange category, indicating serious threats. These include 14 from Maguindanao del Sur and several from Lanao del Sur and other regions.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has stated that no specific security threats have been identified so far, with a gun ban already in effect from July 16 to September 29 to maintain order during the election period.
To ensure a secure election process, a total of 8,299 police personnel have been deployed across the region, with the majority coming from the Police Regional Office – BARMM.
