The tragic collapse of a nine-story building under construction in Angeles City, Pampanga, has resulted in a devastating death toll of 28. This was confirmed by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), which reported the latest figures as of June 6, 2026.
Details of the Incident
The building, situated on Teodoro Street in Barangay Balibago, fell unexpectedly at 2:28 a.m. on May 24, while many construction workers were resting inside. The structure was nearing completion and was intended for use as a condo-hotel.
The collapse also impacted a nearby lodging house, resulting in the death of a 65-year-old Malaysian tourist, with several others sustaining injuries.
Investigation into Construction Violations
Officials are now investigating whether the construction exceeded the scope of its authorized building permit. While the project was approved as a nine-story structure, reports indicate that workers were adding a swimming pool on a planned 10th floor at the time of the disaster.
Authorities are examining if this extra load contributed to the collapse, alongside broader concerns about compliance with construction practices and safety standards.
