Naval forces from the Philippines, the United States, Japan, Canada, and Australia executed live-fire exercises on April 26 as part of the ongoing Balikatan 2026 military drills.

The Philippine Navy confirmed that a seven-ship task group participated in the Gunnery Exercise (Gunnex), simulating coordinated responses to surface threats.

This exercise involved various weaponry, including naval guns and machine guns, across multiple platforms operating in unison.

Fostering Interoperability Among Allies

The drill aimed to strengthen interoperability, coordination, and communication between the allied forces in a shared maritime environment.

Beyond the live-fire evolution, the task group practiced advanced tactical maneuvering and communication protocols.

Participating vessels included the Philippine frigates BRP Antonio Luna and BRP Miguel Malvar, the US amphibious dock landing ship USS Ashland, and ships from Japan, Canada, and Australia.

The Philippine Navy highlighted that these exercises are part of broader multinational maritime operations under Balikatan 41-2026.

These drills reflect the growing cooperation among allied navies in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly in response to maritime challenges.

Balikatan is the Philippines' largest annual joint military exercise, which has evolved to include more complex operations and broader international participation.

The current iteration features around 17,000 troops and is set to conclude on May 8, marking a significant milestone in military collaboration.
