Lapu-Lapu City has launched its Libreng Sakay program, a 10-day cash-for-work initiative aimed at supporting local jeepney drivers. This program, managed by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), began on May 6, 2026.
Under this initiative, 24 jeepney drivers will earn a minimum of P540 daily while providing free rides to commuters along the Babag–Merkado route. The service runs each day from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m.
The program was introduced to alleviate transportation costs for commuters during a challenging economic period, particularly due to the ongoing energy crisis.
The local government aims to continuously assess the program to enhance its effectiveness and maximize benefits for both drivers and the commuting public.
Support for Local Transport Workers
This initiative not only aids commuters but also provides essential financial support to jeepney drivers, many of whom have struggled due to rising fuel prices and reduced ridership.
The Libreng Sakay program is a vital step towards addressing the economic hardships faced by our transport workers and ensuring mobility for our residents.
Lapu-Lapu City Government
As the program progresses, city officials will gather feedback to improve its delivery and impact, ensuring that it meets the needs of the community effectively.
