The Manila International Book Fair (MIBF), the Philippines' largest and longest-running book fair, will open from September 9 to 13 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

This year's fair boasts an impressive lineup of events designed to enhance the literary experience. Attendees can expect author signings, interactive workshops, and talks on topics like emotional wellness.

Books are still at the heart of it, but now stories come alive in many forms — print, digital, audio, and more.

Tinette Capistrano, Vice President, Prime Trade Asia
  • Author signings by Ricky Lee and Howie Severino
  • Comics art demonstration by Manix Abrera
  • Emotional wellness discussions for teachers and parents

Reflecting on the fair's evolution, Capistrano notes its shift from a purely commercial event to a cultural hub. The MIBF began in the 1980s as a small fair at Philcite, primarily focused on sales.

In the 1990s, the introduction of seminars and workshops transformed the atmosphere, making it more educational and community-focused. This change mirrors a broader cultural shift toward valuing reading and literary engagement.

Despite challenges such as rising costs and the impact of the pandemic, the fair has seen a resurgence in attendance. Capistrano attributes this to what she calls 'revenge reading,' where people turned to books during lockdowns.

With discounts ranging from 10% to as much as 70%, the fair promises great deals on popular titles, including inspirational books and works by local authors.

This year's theme, 'GET LIT: Reading in a New Light,' reflects a commitment to adapt to changing reading habits and formats, ensuring that the fair continues to be relevant.

Capistrano encourages first-time visitors to prepare by reviewing exhibitor lists and planning their visits. The fair features over 200 exhibitors, making navigation essential.

The 2026 MIBF runs from September 9 to 13, daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mall of Asia Complex, promising an immersive literary experience for all attendees.
