Daryl Prangos, 32, has transformed his life from a troubled youth involved in gang violence to a dedicated agent with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA). His story exemplifies how a second chance can lead to redemption.
Growing up in Mambaling, Cebu, Daryl faced numerous challenges stemming from a broken home. Without a father and after losing his grandmother, he found solace on the streets.
"I joined a gang because there was no guidance at home. By then, I was living on the streets and became a gang leader," he recalls.
In 2011, Daryl's life took a dramatic turn when he was arrested during a gang conflict. At just 17, he was placed in Operation Second Chance (OSC), a facility aimed at rehabilitating minors caught in violent situations.
A New Beginning at Operation Second Chance
OSC, founded by Margot and Tommy Osmeña, focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment. Here, Daryl discovered hope and the possibility of a brighter future.
"The program was designed so that the child wouldn’t think of themselves as a prisoner," he explains.
Inspired by the story of a former street dweller who became a police officer, Daryl vowed to change his life. He dedicated himself to education and personal growth.
To support his studies, Daryl worked various jobs, including as a habal-habal driver and construction worker. He humorously recalls the teasing from classmates about his unusual jobs.
"I just laughed it off. That became one of my motivations to finish school," he says.
Achieving His Dreams
Daryl graduated with a degree in criminology from the Professional Academy of the Philippines in 2017. He now encourages others to support children at OSC, urging them to spend time with the youth there.
"We have to go through the darkness before we reach the light," he reminds others facing challenges.
"Second chance is more than just a simple phrase; it can change a person’s life forever," Prangos emphasizes.
