Ian Resurreccion, a Filipino musician based in Texas, is transforming the lives of aspiring young musicians in his hometown of Alfonso, Cavite. He regularly sends balikbayan boxes filled with second-hand instruments to give children better opportunities than he had.
From Humble Beginnings to Global Stages
Kasi para sa akin napakalapit sa puso ko ’yung bandang pinanggalingan ko. Doon ako nagsimula. Way of giving back ko ’yun. Dahil nakikita ko ’yung sarili ko sa mga batang nagsimula doon.
Ian Resurreccion, Musician
Resurreccion's journey began in the local marching band, where he played a borrowed saxophone. Now, he searches for instruments at garage sales and flea markets in Texas, packing them in balikbayan boxes to ship back home.
- Collects instruments from friends and musicians in Texas.
- Focuses on second-hand items that can be repaired and reused.
Despite the instruments often being worn or damaged, Resurreccion is optimistic about their potential. He believes talented Filipino repairmen can restore them, allowing children to explore music just as he did.
Education Through Adversity
At just 12 years old, Resurreccion joined the marching band, eventually earning a scholarship to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Conservatory of Music. He faced challenges, including learning the bassoon when there were not enough saxophones.
His scholarship opened doors, allowing him to pursue music professionally despite initial doubts from his family about his career choice.
Instruments of Change
Now, as a doctoral candidate in music, Resurreccion reflects on how his experiences shaped him. Each instrument sent back carries a chance for a child to discover a passion for music and a pathway to opportunities beyond their small town.
Resurreccion's mission serves as a reminder of the profound impact music can have on lives, especially for those who start their journey in humble circumstances.
