Cebu City is moving forward with a plan to revitalize Fuente Osmeña Circle, aiming for a greener and more pedestrian-friendly environment. City officials intend to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall design of the area.
The initiative comes in response to ongoing concerns regarding the deteriorating infrastructure and limited public use of the park. A recent meeting on May 5 between Mayor Nestor Archival and Cebu Chamber of Commerce representatives highlighted key priorities for the project.
Addressing Infrastructure Issues
An initial assessment revealed multiple structural problems at the site. These include damaged jogging paths, uneven surfaces, and hazardous walkways interrupted by exposed manhole covers.
City officials also pointed out that poorly designed exits and sudden elevation changes pose risks for pedestrians and joggers. Additionally, the presence of mature trees and utility placements complicates movement within the area.
Enhancing Accessibility and Traffic Flow
The redevelopment plan introduces a clearer layout for pedestrians. It features expanded walkways, defined access points, and more direct routes leading to the iconic fountain.
A proposed 12-meter access aligned with the Capitol axis aims to improve pedestrian traffic flow and minimize conflicts with vehicles. The design also includes more seating and open spaces to encourage public engagement.
Sustainable Design and Community Input
The plan retains the landmark’s identity by emphasizing the fountain as a focal point while maintaining visual connections along Osmeña Boulevard toward Cebu Provincial Capitol.
Sustainability measures are integral to the design, including increased green areas, shaded pathways, and vegetation buffers to mitigate noise and pollution.
Mayor Archival confirmed that public consultations will continue as the city refines the rehabilitation plan, seeking input from various stakeholders to ensure broad community support.
