GMA Kapuso Foundation has stepped up to assist families in Southern Leyte by distributing school supplies to 3,000 students from kindergarten to Grade 3. The initiative, part of the Unang Hakbang sa Kinabukasan project, aims to ease the burden on parents preparing for the new academic year.

The foundation’s outreach included visits to various areas, such as Limasawa Island, San Ricardo, Pintuyan, San Juan, and Padre Burgos. Many families in these regions face financial difficulties, especially during the rainy season when tourism declines.

  • Families rely on fishing and selling dried squid for income

Local residents, like tricycle driver Alger Gilles, shared how their incomes drop significantly during the rainy months, making it hard to support their children's education. "Noong nakaraang taon, June, July medyo humina kami nung pasukan na," Gilles explained.

Mothers in Barangay Lugsongan often contribute to their household income by selling dried squid. Jocelyn Delos Santos emphasized the importance of education, stating that it is the most valuable gift parents can provide.

The GMA Kapuso Foundation invites those interested in supporting their initiatives to donate through various channels, including Metrobank, Land Bank, and GCash. More information can be found on the GMA Kapuso Foundation website.
