A recent Ipsos BVA survey has revealed that nearly 50% of young Europeans are using AI chatbots to discuss personal issues, including mental health. The study highlights the growing reliance on technology for emotional support among this demographic.

Conducted in early 2026, the survey involved 3,800 participants aged 11 to 25 across France, Germany, Sweden, and Ireland. The results show that 51% of respondents found it easier to talk about mental health with chatbots compared to healthcare professionals (49%) and psychologists (37%).

In contrast, discussions with family and friends were deemed easier by 68% and 61% of respondents, respectively. This indicates a notable trend where young individuals are looking for alternative avenues for emotional expression.

About 90% of those surveyed reported prior usage of AI tools, citing their constant availability and non-judgmental approach as key factors. Over 60% referred to chatbots as 'life advisers' or 'confidants'.

However, experts express concerns about the psychological implications of relying solely on AI for emotional support. Ludwig Franke Föyen, a psychologist at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institutet, warned against depending on chatbots for mental health needs.

AI can offer information and support, but it should not replace human relationships or professional care. If someone turns to a chatbot instead of speaking to a parent or a friend, that is a concern,

The survey also revealed that 28% of participants displayed symptoms consistent with generalized anxiety disorder, raising further concerns about the mental well-being of young people in Europe.

As the use of AI chatbots for emotional support becomes more prevalent, the need for a balanced approach that combines technology with human interaction remains critical.
