The world stands at a critical juncture in the fight against HIV, with UNAIDS reporting an alarming 18% decrease in global funding for 2025. This reduction, amounting to $7.3 billion, is the lowest funding level observed in nearly 20 years.
Political Instability and Funding Challenges
The international community has entered a period of profound political and financial upheaval that threatens decades of hard-won gains against HIV.

The report, unveiled at an International AIDS conference in Brazil, attributes much of this funding decline to political changes in the United States. Previously, the U.S. contributed 75% of international HIV funding, but a temporary halt in support ordered by President Donald Trump in January 2025 severely disrupted ongoing programs.

- 1.2 million people contracted HIV last year alone.
- Countries like Cameroon, Nigeria, and Zambia saw over a 50% drop in pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) usage.
Despite some increases in domestic funding in various countries, the overall decline in resources is concerning. UNAIDS emphasized that many nations, especially in sub-Saharan Africa, could not compensate for lost international aid, jeopardizing prevention and treatment initiatives.
The report cautioned that without renewed commitment from global leaders, the ambitious goal to end AIDS by 2030 may remain unachieved, risking a resurgence of the virus, which has already seen significant advancements in controlling its spread.
