The extreme heatwave that hit France, Belgium, and the Netherlands from June 20 to 28 has been described as the worst in recorded European history, leading to at least 3,700 excess deaths.
Preliminary data indicates France recorded about 2,025 excess deaths, with a significant rise in fatalities among individuals aged over 45, according to French Health Minister Stephanie Rist.
In Belgium, approximately 1,200 excess deaths were reported between June 18 and 29. Of these, 530 victims were aged 85 or older, while 180 were under 65. The Health Ministry called this level of mortality during a heatwave unprecedented.
The Netherlands reported around 480 excess deaths, primarily affecting those over 80.
