A suspected hantavirus outbreak has resulted in three deaths and left around 150 passengers stranded aboard the MV Hondius, currently quarantined off the Cape Verde islands.
The crisis began when a Dutch passenger died on April 11, while the ship was en route to Tristan da Cunha. His body remained on board until April 24, leading to increasing tensions among passengers.
On May 2, fellow passenger Jake Rosmarin expressed his distress in a video, revealing the emotional toll on those stuck on the ship. He stated, 'What’s happening right now is very real for all of us.'
Timeline of the Outbreak
After the initial death, two more passengers—a Dutch woman and a German national—succumbed to illness, raising alarms about the virus's spread. The British passenger, who was evacuated for treatment in South Africa, has tested positive for hantavirus.
Health authorities in South Africa and Cape Verde have reassured the public that there is currently no risk of the virus spreading on land, as the ship has remained at sea.

The Hondius embarked on a voyage marketed as an Antarctic nature expedition, starting in March from Ushuaia, Argentina. Passengers paid between 14,000 to 22,000 euros for the experience.
