The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced that 38 Filipino crew members on the MV Hondius will start a mandatory 40-day quarantine in the Netherlands. This decision follows a recent Hantavirus outbreak on the ship.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac confirmed the quarantine during a virtual press briefing on May 10, emphasizing adherence to international health protocols.
The MV Hondius, a Polar Class 6 research vessel launched in 2019, is equipped for extreme nature excursions and has a capacity for 196 passengers and 70 crew members.
Although all crew members tested negative for the virus, they will be closely monitored to ensure their ongoing health and safety.
Health and Safety Protocols in Place
Cacdac detailed that the crew consists of 24 hotel staff and 14 members from the deck and engine departments. They will remain under strict medical supervision during their isolation.
To aid the crew, the Philippine government has ensured they will receive full salaries and benefits. Additional support will come from the Action Fund and other programs.
The DMW, in collaboration with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), is committed to the crew's welfare.
The MV Hondius was previously diverted to Tenerife, Spain, for passenger evacuation and is now following stringent international health mandates to curb any further virus spread.
