With the Philippines boasting over 7,600 islands, summer invites many to enjoy outdoor activities. However, prolonged sun exposure raises the risk of skin issues.

Dr. Ma. Margarita Isabel Carlos-Tanchiong, a skin specialist at Makati Medical Center, cautions that the desire for a tan can lead to harmful effects.

That tan on your skin is a sunburn. It may look nice, but it also damages your skin.

Common problems associated with sun exposure include sunburn, acne, and fungal infections. MakatiMed has outlined preventive measures and treatments for these conditions.

Sunburn is one of the most prevalent issues, often resulting in peeling, flaking, and painful blisters. To alleviate this, Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong advises finding shade immediately.

“Stay in a cool room or bathe in cool water, then gently apply aloe vera or a ceramide lotion. Avoid popping blisters and consider taking pain relievers to manage discomfort,” she said.

Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is crucial. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.

Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong emphasizes the need to protect exposed areas such as ears and neck, and recommends wearing sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats.

Avoiding direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. can also significantly reduce skin damage.

The summer heat can also trigger acne breakouts due to increased sweating, which clogs pores.

“Use a soap-free cleanser or one with salicylic acid to clean your face regularly,” she suggests. Opt for non-comedogenic sunscreens and gel-based moisturizers.

For acne on the back or neck, wearing loose cotton clothing helps keep the skin cool.

Fungal infections are another risk in humid conditions, as fungi thrive in warmth and moisture.

Dr. Carlos-Tanchiong warns that conditions like athlete's foot and jock itch can arise during this season.

“Keep areas prone to moisture clean and dry, wash your towels regularly, and avoid scratching to prevent spreading infections,” she advises.

Consulting a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment is essential if symptoms persist.
